Castor beans

Ricinus communis, the castor bean or castor oil plant, is a species of perennial flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus, Ricinus, and subtribe, Ricininae. The evolution of castor and its relation to other species are currently being studied using modern genetic tools. It is also used orally to start labor in pregnancy.

There is limited scientific research to support the other uses of castor oil and castor bean.

Ricin from the hull of the castor seed has been tested as a chemical warfare agent. Some varieties sport attractive bronze or burgundy foliage. If you have consumed castor oil before, you might be surprised to learn that castor beans contain one of the most poisonous substances in the worl ricin. Given the showy nature of its other aspects, the fact that castor bean has small, dull flowers may come as a surprise. Just one castor bean has enough ricin to kill an adult within a few minutes.

Pharmaceutical castor oil use includes expectorants, anti-dandruff treatments and emulsifiers.

Its Latin name, Ricinus, means tick because the seeds are said to resemble a blood filled tick. Fewer beans will kill a child. The skin of the bean is quite firm and thick. Would it surprise you that you can eat a handful of beans and have no effect from them? If you swallow the castor bean whole, it will travel through your system intact.

No ricin will enter your body. No, castor beans are, in no way, related to any other plant in the bean family (not even remotely). Yes, castor oil is extracted from castor beans.

Swallowing castor beans rarely proves to be fatal unless the bean is thoroughly chewed. The survival rate of castor bean ingestion is. The plants belong to the Euphorbiaceae family.

That makes them relatives of poinsettia plants and wood spurge. Gardeners should check with local municipal codes prior to planting castor bean s to ensure it is not unlawful. The seeds of the castor bean plant contain ricin, a potent poison with no known antidote.

The castor bean plant, or ricinus communis, is a favorite among many gardeners due to its colorful, tropical foliage and vigorous growth. They have vibrant, red leaves and they produce red and yellow flowers. They're also extremely toxic to both people and animals.

In other areas, they are grown as an annual plant. Treated hybrid castor seeds. Castor bean plants are beautiful.

Each ha produces 1-tons on first harvest - Each ha produces 3-tons after first harst - No. I had seen a few in my neighborhood and finally tracked a plant down in nearby. Grow castor bean as a specimen for a dramatic focal point in the landscape, or in groups for a tropical effect in the back of beds or near water features. In USDA planting zone and above, castor bean plants grow as perennials that look like small trees.

Growing castor beans is extremely easy. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble, therefore, castor oil does not contain ricin, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. It can be used to create a temporary screen or informal hedge or can be grown in large containers on patios.

Ricin comes from the castor plant and is one of the deadliest toxins in the world - just ask Walter White!
